Here's how hitting the road, canoe, or trails has shaped my art and perspective. As I look back at my journals for the past 30 years, I see not only words but also drawings, sketches, and snippets of memories that fill in the gaps between the words on the page. Over time, I have come to believe that stopping and studying a place gives you permission to take in much of what many people miss as they pass by. Art offers a unique study of time and place and the opportunity to truly understand what makes that place unique and wonderful in its own way. Beyond offering us a change of scenery, it provides an open door to seeing light and shadows and feeling what shapes the amazing places we will go. Here is a little insight into how I see the influence of place on my work:
Capturing Emotional Essence: Travel isn't merely about geographical exploration; it's about delving into the essence of each destination. Every place holds a unique palette of sentiments and perspectives waiting to be unveiled on your canvas of choice. When I translate these impressionistic landscapes onto canvas, they manifest as vibrant colors and bold strokes, attempting to capture the essence of the flow, movement, and feeling of a place.
Curating Experiential Riches: I find traveling is similar to curating a gallery of experiences, with each memory a sketch or brushstroke adding to an artistic narrative. These experiences aren't always just captured scenes; they can be the essence of a paused time, immortalized through artistry. My paintings serve as a testament to the richness of experiential investments made while traversing the globe—its pathways, highways, and let's not forget its rivers and lakes.
Drawing from Diverse Inspirations: From the bustling streets of Lisbon and Paris to the serene tranquility of the Great Lakes, travel exposes me to limitless inspirations. The diversity of cultural experiences and their art explored on my journeys fuels my imagination, enriching my artistic expressions with depth and authenticity. Each destination serves as a wellspring of renewed creativity and definitely influences my work in new directions.
Shifting Perspectives: Just as art has the power to transform spaces, travel has the ability to transform perspectives. Stepping out of my comfort zone (and studio) and immersing myself in new environments broadens my artistic appreciation, enabling me to perceive the world through fresh eyes and new lenses. I find my art becomes a conduit for sharing these unique experiences, inviting people to possibly see the world from a different vantage point.
A Piece of Time and Place: I feel like my art can serve to encapsulate the essence of my experiences, what I have seen and taken the time to explore or study. Each painting, sketch, watercolor, or drawing can be a cherished memory and aims to remind us of an experience or narrative in a moment in time or place. Through my work, I always aim to share the richness of the world I see and evoke a sense of wanderlust, flow, or movement that is unique to the place I work to present, with the intention of inviting everyone who experiences them to embark on a journey of their own with the work.
I would love for you to embark on a journey through the canvas of the world with me and explore my collection, discovering the stories woven into each brushstroke.
