Show: Bold Landscape Impressionism. Exploring 44.5°N, 76.3°W.
Art is a form of story telling; a language on its own with variations and tones. These stories are influenced by places, ideas and experiences. This show like the artist himself draws influence from a combination of personal experience and a style of art known as Fauvism – works that emphasize strong colour over the realistic representation of the subject with a sense of explosion on the canvas. With a passion for the outdoors, hiking, camping and the natural beauty of “places”, Andrew uses his bold voice to create striking and colourful interpretations of the familiar land of his youth and adulthood. You will see yourself standing in that spot, swimming in that lake, and staying in that cabin. You will remember the light and strong colours of the shadows that surround you.
Davis Lock and Sand Lake – part of the Rideau Lakes region and Rideau canal system in Eastern Ontario – is situated at longitude 44oNorth and latitude 76oW. This lake and surrounding area have been a year-round retreat for Andrew and his family for over 30 years. This is the inspiration for this series of bold and striking acrylics from Andrew. Each season, each month, brings new light, new shadows – challenging the artist to capture the emotion of the outdoors reflecting his feelings about this special place and time.
This is (my) Andrew Milne’s first solo show. Coming off an incredibly successful multi-artist show at The Tate in Kingston, Ontario in October 2021, Andrew is thrilled to be asked by Velma McColl to show his work in a beautiful urban setting. There is a nice synergy between the physical and natural architecture that will make this a special show.
